QUESTIONS - SOCIAL
IF ELECTED, WOULD YOU SUPPORT THE CURRENT PRACTICE OF PROVIDING MUNICIPAL LAND (UNDER A HOUSING
AGREEMENT) AND WAIVING DEVELOPMENT COST CHARGES TO NON-PROFIT AFFORDABLE HOUSING AGENCIES
WHOARE SEEKING TO CONSTRUCT NEW HOUSING PROJECTS?
BC Housing will be providing 7 billion in the next 10 years. The only way that we will be able to utilize this funding is if municipalities can work with developers and bring them to the table through tax incentives. We also need to reduce red tape, work on our approval process and revisit our DCC's.
DO YOU SUPPORT THE IDEA THAT HIGH-DENSITY, COMPACT HOUSING IS ANOTHER IMPORTANT WAY TO ADDRESS AFFORDABLE/ATTAINABLE HOUSING? IF NOT, WHAT SOLUTIONS DO YOU PROPOSE TO ADDRESSAFFORDABILITY?
100% As our population demographics change, the younger generation is more active and spending time outside of their home, there is less desire for big houses.
It’s more attainable and affordable for developers to build medium to high-density homes and the end result is more affordable housing on the market. Having neighborhoods with compact or high-density homes would also help with keeping the costs of maintenance down.
VERNON IS ANTICIPATED TO EXPERIENCE INCREASED IMMIGRATION FROM ELSEWHERE IN THE PROVINCE AND
COUNTRY AS WELL AS OTHER COUNTRIES. DO YOU SUPPORT THESE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF IMMIGRATION AND IF
SO, HOW WOULD YOU FACILITATE NEW IMMIGRANTS’ INTEGRATION INTO THE COMMUNITY?
As a daughter of immigrant parents, I whole heartily support immigration. We need people to come into the community to fill jobs and be part of the community. On a municipal level, we can work with the social service agencies and ensure they are getting the support they need.
IF YOU ARE ELECTED, WILL YOU CONTINUE THE POLICY OF PROVIDING FREE BUS PASSES FOR REFUGEES IN THEIR
I’m in support of the bus passes for new immigrants. I have personally witnessed how hard it is for immigrants to obtain a drivers license and Vernon is not an easy area to get around without transportation. They need to be mobile to get to know their community and surroundings and be able to do basic things like grocery shopping without it being too difficult.
QUESTIONS - ENVIRONMENTAL
IF ELECTED, WILL YOU SUPPORT THE CITY'S GROWTH STRATEGY AND LAND USE PLAN, AS CONTAINED IN THE OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN 2013 BYLAW 5470, OR WOULD YOU OPEN UP GREENFIELD AREAS FOR
As a sitting councillor, I do support the growth strategy and land use plan. I would like to see the city encourage development from the downtown core. We have a lot of lands are sitting unused and not in not greenfield areas that can be developed. As stated above this will help with maintenance costs as well.
IF ELECTED, WILL YOU SUPPORT THE CITY'S ADOPTED MASTER TRANSPORTATION PLAN, WITH ITS EMPHASIS ONMORE TRIPS TO BE MADE BY WALKING, CYCLING, TRANSIT AND CARPOOLING (COLLECTIVELY KNOWN AS ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION) INSTEAD OF IN A SINGLE OCCUPANT VEHICLE (SOV)?
Enter the Answer to your Question here. Be thoughtful with your answer, write clearly, and consider adding examples. This can help your visitors get the help they need quickly and easily.
DO YOU SUPPORT DEVELOPING BYLAWS THAT REQUIRE BUILDERS TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE BC
ENERGY STEP CODE (A SINGLE PROVINCIAL STANDARD FOR ACHIEVING MORE ENERGY-EFFICIENT BUILDINGS).
I support developing bylaws that require builders to meet the requirements of the BC Energy Step Code as long as it is done in increments for builders to support, otherwise the cost of housing will go up and this won’t help us in a market where we are trying to attain affordable housing. Education is key, as many builders only look at the upfront cost opposed to the long-term savings. As a corporation, we need to look at alternative ways of reducing our carbon footprint with incentive programs.
QUESTIONS - CULTURAL
DO YOU SEE ARTS AND CULTURE AS HAVING AN ACTIVE ROLE IN MAKING VERNON A MORE DESIRABLE PLACE TO LIVE, IN BUILDING COMMUNITY, AND AS AN ECONOMIC DRIVER? IF SO, HOW DO YOU PLAN TO SUPPORT IT IN THE FUTURE?
It is a known fact that for every dollar spent in the Arts there is a $7 return.
WILL YOU VOTE ‘YES’ IN THE OCT 20 GREATER VERNON REFERENDUM ON BORROWING UP TO $25 MILLION FOR THE PURPOSE OF CONSTRUCTING A NEW CULTURAL CENTRE IN DOWNTOWN VERNON?
will be voting Yes. I have been a huge proponent since I was first elected in 2014. Preserving history, through the telling of stories expression is essential for any community’s growth. It will also be a huge economic driver to the community. It will be a great way to preserve and showcase history. To have OKIB be a part of this project alone is a good reason to vote yes.
QUESTIONS - ECONOMIC
IF YOU ARE ELECTED, HOW WILL YOU PARTNER WITH OTHER COMMUNITIES IN THE REGION TO SUPPORT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT; AND WHICH INITIATIVES HIGHLIGHTED IN THE REGIONAL EMPLOYMENT LANDS ACTION PLAN INTEREST YOU MOST, AND WHY?
I think that we need to understand that Vernon just doesn't have enough land to accommodate every type of business, It is essential we work with surrounding communities to promote economic growth. A recent example is the 60-million-dollar investment of VEGPRO. Through our tourism board, and with the help of our economic development officer we continue to cross-promote business's thus leading to an indirect benefit for Vernon.
PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE OF THE WAYS YOU WOULD SUPPORT BUSINESS RETENTION AND EXPANSION IN THE CITY?
I believe the greatest ways to support retention and expansion in the city is through cross promotion. In order for a business to thrive, we need people willing to spend money. We need to ensure that our city is easy to navigate through, create a healthier and vibrant downtown core. People go where people are. Thus they end up also spending more.
OVER 40% OF BUSINESSES IN EVERY SECTOR ARE EXPERIENCING LABOUR AND SKILL SHORTAGES. HOW SHOULD
THE CITY SUPPORT OUR DEMANDING WORKFORCE NEEDS?
Streamlining the process for businesses to grow so they don’t feel they have to go through numerous loopholes and costs to expand. We need business to feel they have the support they need. In many cases even if labor is found it is nearly impossible to accommodate them. This is where the city can streamline the process with builders and developers in the building process. More builds will mean more availability thus alleviating one of the major issues of labor recruitment and retention.
HOW SHOULD THE CITY SUPPORT EMERGING SECTORS SUCH AS CANNABIS, TECHNOLOGY AND ENHANCED
MANUFACTURING (IE. LARGE SCALE BUSINESSES THAT MANUFACTURE PRODUCTS FOR SEVERAL COMPANIES IN
ONE LOCATION, SUCH AS ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS FOR THE MILITARY OF HOSPITALS)
Education is the key. We must make sure our staff is educated and ready to accommodate any new emerging sector. We need to prepared and ready so that when business is ready to invest they are coming here because we understand and accommodate what they need. Availability of labor and housing are key factors for business in making their decision on where to invest. Offering tax incentives and or streamlining the process is also a great way to attract new businesses.
QUESTIONS - HEALTH
GIVEN THAT VERNON’S OVER 65 POPULATION IS AT 25% (HIGHER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE OF 16.9%,), THAT CHRONIC DISEASES ARE ON THE RISE AND INCREASE WITH AGE, AND THAT SOCIAL ISOLATION IS MORE PREVALENT IN OUR SENIORS,
IF ELECTED, HOW WILL YOU SUPPORT INFRASTRUCTURE AND PROGRAMMING TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND REDUCE ISOLATION FOR OUR SENIOR POPULATION AND THOSE WITH CHRONIC DISEASES, AS DESCRIBED IN THE DRAFT RECREATION MASTER PLAN
One of the major reasons they do not venture out is accessibility. Even though we are creating more biking and walking paths, we need to be mindful of how seniors navigate a city and create a safe and accessible environment for them. These may include ramps, lighting, railings. Creating more amenities that not just cater but also integrate seniors will encourage them to come out. Currently, we have limited opportunities for seniors to interact and engage with the general public in a safe and encouraging way.
THE 2018 CANADIAN PARTICIPATION REPORT CARD WAS RELEASED WHICH IDENTIFIED THAT 91% OF CHILDREN AGES 5-17 DO NOT MEET MINIMAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY GUIDELINES FOR HEALTH. IN CONSULTATION WITH PARENT ADVISORY COUNCILS, LACK OF SAFE AND CONNECTED BICYCLING AND WALKING CORRIDORS FOR CHILDREN HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS THE MAIN BARRIER. VERNON HAS BEEN DEVELOPING SEPARATE ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION CORRIDORS THROUGHOUT THE CITY BUT THERE ARE GAPS IN CONNECTIONS WITH NEIGHBORHOODS, THE DOWNTOWN CORE, AND TO THE RECREATION CENTER.
· IF ELECTED, HOW WILL YOU PROMOTE AN INTEGRATED AND CONNECTED ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION NETWORK SO ALL USERS FROM 8 TO 80 CAN FEEL SAFE WHEN TRAVELLING BY NON-MOTORIZED TRANSPORTATION?
Not only creating more biking, and walking paths but ensuring they are safe by maintaining them on a regular basis, especially in the winter.
DUE TO CONCERNS ABOUT ADVERSE HEALTH RISKS OF USING PESTICIDES FOR COSMETIC PURPOSES, THE CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY HAS RELEASED A POSITION STATEMENT URGING MUNICIPALITIES TO BAN THE USE OF THESE CHEMICALS. THERE ARE CURRENTLY 40 MUNICIPALITIES IN BC WHICH HAVE BANNED PESTICIDES FOR NON-ESSENTIAL PURPOSES.
· IF ELECTED, WHAT IS YOUR STANCE ON PESTICIDE USE FOR NON-ESSENTIAL PURPOSES IN AREAS WHERE CHILDREN AND PETS ARE AT RISK?
As a municipaly, we should be leading by example using alternatives that have the same results, In circumstances where we do not need to use pesticides, we should look at alternatives.
