QUESTIONS - SOCIAL

IF ELECTED, WOULD YOU SUPPORT THE CURRENT PRACTICE OF PROVIDING MUNICIPAL LAND (UNDER A HOUSING AGREEMENT) AND WAIVING DEVELOPMENT COST CHARGES TO NON-PROFIT AFFORDABLE HOUSING AGENCIES WHO ARE SEEKING TO CONSTRUCT NEW HOUSING PROJECTS?

Yes. That said, I would review on a case by case basis to ask questions such as ‘Is the location suitable?’, ‘Is the housing actually affordable?’ etc.

DO YOU SUPPORT THE IDEA THAT HIGH-DENSITY, COMPACT HOUSING IS ANOTHER IMPORTANT WAY TO ADDRESS AFFORDABLE/ATTAINABLE HOUSING? IF NOT, WHAT SOLUTIONS DO YOU PROPOSE TO ADDRESS AFFORDABILITY?

Yes, high-density, compact housing is one important way to address affordable/attainable housing.

VERNON IS ANTICIPATED TO EXPERIENCE INCREASED IMMIGRATION FROM ELSEWHERE IN THE PROVINCE AND COUNTRY AS WELL AS OTHER COUNTRIES. DO YOU SUPPORT THESE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF IMMIGRATION AND IF SO, HOW WOULD YOU FACILITATE NEW IMMIGRANTS’ INTEGRATION INTO THE COMMUNITY

Yes. I am a supporter of others, from any distance, moving to Vernon. I am also a strong supporter of multiculturalism. That said, Vernon has its own culture which we create. When someone relocates to Vernon, I operate on the basis that they have chosen Vernon because they like the culture

IF YOU ARE ELECTED, WILL YOU CONTINUE THE POLICY OF PROVIDING FREE BUS PASSES FOR REFUGEES IN THEIR FIRST YEAR?

Yes.

QUESTIONS - ENVIRONMENTAL

IF ELECTED, WILL YOU SUPPORT THE CITY'S GROWTH STRATEGY AND LAND USE PLAN, AS CONTAINED IN THE OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN 2013 BYLAW 5470, OR WOULD YOU OPEN UP GREENFIELD AREAS FOR DEVELOPMENT?

I am a supporter of the City’s Growth Strategy and Land Use Plan. You will hear me talk about development and how this helps our community in many ways. A thriving community will have greenspace available for residents. Use of the greenfields need to be considered carefully

IF ELECTED, WILL YOU SUPPORT THE CITY'S ADOPTED MASTER TRANSPORTATION PLAN, WITH ITS EMPHASIS ON MORE TRIPS TO BE MADE BY WALKING, CYCLING, TRANSIT AND CARPOOLING (COLLECTIVELY KNOWN AS ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION) INSTEAD OF IN A SINGLE OCCUPANT VEHICLE (SOV)?

Yes I will adopt the City’s Master Transportation Plan.

DO YOU SUPPORT DEVELOPING BYLAWS THAT REQUIRE BUILDERS TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE BC ENERGY STEP CODE (A SINGLE PROVINCIAL STANDARD FOR ACHIEVING MORE ENERGY-EFFICIENT BUILDINGS).

Very much so. Working in the real-estate field, I have followed the Step Code over the last couple years and have attended seminars, workshops and attended some of the licensing courses for my own education. The Step Code has many benefits. I am cognitive of the fact that pushing the Step Code through too fast has negative effects on the developers themselves. Also, pushing the code through at a pace faster than the immediately surrounding area will discourage developers from approaching Vernon. All these factors need to be taken into consideration. That said, I will be a big advocate for developing bylaws that require builders to meet the Step Code requirements.

QUESTIONS - CULTURAL

DO YOU SEE ARTS AND CULTURE AS HAVING AN ACTIVE ROLE IN MAKING VERNON A MORE DESIRABLE PLACE TO LIVE, IN BUILDING COMMUNITY, AND AS AN ECONOMIC DRIVER? IF SO, HOW DO YOU PLAN TO SUPPORT IT IN THE FUTURE?

Yes. Arts and culture is what gives a city life. Everything is arts and culture. Its very important on many levels. One way I will be supporting arts and culture is to vote yes for the Arts and Culture Centre. Another will be support of a new pool. That is also our arts and culture of Vernon. This is a very oversimplified answer for a complex question.

WILL YOU VOTE ‘YES’ IN THE OCT 20 GREATER VERNON REFERENDUM ON BORROWING UP TO $25 MILLION FOR THE PURPOSE OF CONSTRUCTING A NEW CULTURAL CENTRE IN DOWNTOWN VERNON?

Yes.
