QUESTIONS - SOCIAL
IF ELECTED, WOULD YOU SUPPORT THE CURRENT PRACTICE OF PROVIDING MUNICIPAL LAND (UNDER A HOUSING AGREEMENT) AND WAIVING DEVELOPMENT COST CHARGES TO NON-PROFIT AFFORDABLE HOUSING AGENCIES WHO ARE SEEKING TO CONSTRUCT NEW HOUSING PROJECTS?
DO YOU SUPPORT THE IDEA THAT HIGH-DENSITY, COMPACT HOUSING IS ANOTHER IMPORTANT WAY TO ADDRESS AFFORDABLE/ATTAINABLE HOUSING? IF NOT, WHAT SOLUTIONS DO YOU PROPOSE TO ADDRESS AFFORDABILITY?
Yes - With limited city space this is a responsible way to meet the housing needs within the City
of Vernon- The OCP has laid out a comprehensive plan for compact high density housing. I will
be doing everything possible to follow the plan as set with feedback from the citizens.
VERNON IS ANTICIPATED TO EXPERIENCE INCREASED IMMIGRATION FROM ELSEWHERE IN THE PROVINCE
AND COUNTRY AS WELL AS OTHER COUNTRIES. DO YOU SUPPORT THESE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF IMMIGRATION
AND IF SO, HOW WOULD YOU FACILITATE NEW IMMIGRANTS’ INTEGRATION INTO THE COMMUNITY?
I personally have employed new immigrants. I think it is imperative to create a diverse and
vibrant community including programing such as those provided by immigrant services. It is not
the city’s mandate to provide programing but supporting services and initiatives that
encourages diversity and economic growth including talent brought in by programs like the
Provincial Nominee Program.
IF YOU ARE ELECTED, WILL YOU CONTINUE THE POLICY OF PROVIDING FREE BUS PASSES FOR REFUGEES IN THEIR FIRST YEAR?
QUESTIONS - ENVIRONMENTAL
IF ELECTED, WILL YOU SUPPORT THE CITY'S GROWTH STRATEGY AND LAND USE PLAN, AS CONTAINED IN THE OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN 2013 BYLAW 5470, OR WOULD YOU OPEN UP GREENFIELD AREAS FOR DEVELOPMENT?
My commitment to follow the OCP is unwavering. This is a provincially required document that
will allow Vernon to grow in a healthy sustainable manner.
IF ELECTED, WILL YOU SUPPORT THE CITY'S ADOPTED MASTER TRANSPORTATION PLAN, WITH ITS EMPHASIS ON MORE TRIPS TO BE MADE BY WALKING, CYCLING, TRANSIT AND CARPOOLING (COLLECTIVELY KNOWN AS ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION) INSTEAD OF IN A SINGLE OCCUPANT VEHICLE (SOV)?
Yes– The need for us to reduce our carbon footprint is essential and I am in support of initiatives that move us in that direction.
DO YOU SUPPORT DEVELOPING BYLAWS THAT REQUIRE BUILDERS TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE BC ENERGY STEP CODE (A SINGLE PROVINCIAL STANDARD FOR ACHIEVING MORE ENERGY-EFFICIENT BUILDINGS)?
I know builders don’t like the Step Code because it costs them a little more money but I am an
advocate for this bylaw development.
QUESTIONS - CULTURAL
DO YOU SEE ARTS AND CULTURE AS HAVING AN ACTIVE ROLE IN MAKING VERNON A MORE DESIRABLE PLACE TO LIVE, IN BUILDING COMMUNITY, AND AS AN ECONOMIC DRIVER? IF SO, HOW DO YOU PLAN TO SUPPORT IT IN THE FUTURE?
The ongoing growth of the arts and culture sector will ensure we continue to be attractive to
the young, savvy entrepreneur as well as families. The community’s appreciation and need for
arts and culture seems to be growing as the demographic of the city evolves. I will, after much
investigation and clarification vote yes to the new cultural centre in Vernon. That being said the
voice of the people, not mine, is what is important and what will, or will not grow the arts and
culture sector in our community. A new cultural centre in the downtown core will positively
impact our economy in the downtown core and that to me is worth a yes vote!
WILL YOU VOTE ‘YES’ IN THE OCTOBER 20 GREATER VERNON REFERENDUM ON BORROWING UP TO $25 MILLION FOR THE PURPOSE OF CONSTRUCTING A NEW CULTURAL CENTRE IN DOWNTOWN VERNON?
As of today yes. It’s a big ask but I feel the community will benefit both economically as well as
socially from the yes vote. (see:
QUESTIONS - ECONOMIC
IF YOU ARE ELECTED, HOW WILL YOU PARTNER WITH OTHER COMMUNITIES IN THE REGION TO SUPPORT
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT; AND WHICH INITIATIVES HIGHLIGHTED IN THE REGIONAL EMPLOYMENT LANDS
ACTION PLAN INTEREST YOU MOST, AND WHY?
I feel partnership and collaboration between both levels of government and area communities
will continue to be essential for the success of Vernon The initiative that excites me most is the
goal of the plan to “Identify the vacant land parcels that can realistically be developed to
generate employment within the next 5 years” I believe any initiative that bolsters employment
and better utilizes the asset of land within the city, region, or Province is something I endorse.
PROVIDE EXAMPLES OF THE WAYS YOU WOULD SUPPORT BUSINESS RETENTION AND EXPANSION IN THE CITY?
Support ease of permitting process
consistent municipal development rules
Strategic construction schedule (Paving and road development)
Continue to support the Economic Development department in initiatives that seed growth
OVER 40% OF BUSINESSES IN EVERY SECTOR ARE EXPERIENCING LABOUR AND SKILL SHORTAGES. HOW SHOULD THE CITY SUPPORT OUR DEMANDING WORKFORCE NEEDS?
Continued support of organizations such as Nexus &a Community Futures, Friendship Centre and
the college to provide innovative programs and training. Continue supporting talent brought in
by programs like the Provincial Nominee Program. Support initiatives that make Vernon a greater, safer more affordable place to live. Support infrastructure that attracts talent to the city i.e. Cultural Centre
HOW SHOULD THE CITY SUPPORT EMERGING SECTORS SUCH AS CANNABIS, TECHNOLOGY AND ENHANCED MANUFACTURING (I.E. LARGE SCALE BUSINESSES THAT MANUFACTURE PRODUCTS FOR SEVERAL COMPANIES IN ONE LOCATION, SUCH AS ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS FOR THE MILITARY OR HOSPITALS)?
The city should support emerging sectors by working together with neighbouring communities.
It is our responsibility to ensure optimal land use that creates opportunity growth and
economic benefit for our City and area.
QUESTIONS - HEALTH
GIVEN THAT VERNON’S OVER 65 POPULATION IS AT 25% (HIGHER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE OF 16.9%), THAT CHRONIC DISEASES ARE ON THE RISE AND INCREASE WITH AGE, AND THAT SOCIAL ISOLATION IS MORE PREVALENT IN OUR SENIORS,
IF ELECTED, HOW WILL YOU SUPPORT INFRASTRUCTURE AND PROGRAMMING TO IMPROVE HEALTH AND REDUCE ISOLATION FOR OUR SENIOR POPULATION AND THOSE WITH CHRONIC DISEASES, AS DESCRIBED IN THE DRAFT RECREATION MASTER PLAN?
Although social issues are not within the mandate of the City I will be an advocate for
supporting a healthy community over all. The senior tax payer needs to be considered when
decisions are made including walking paths and other recreation services. Infrastructure for the
city should always be compliant with accessibility requirements for both people with mobility
issues as well as seniors. These are ongoing problems within the city.
THE 2018 CANADIAN PARTICIPATION REPORT CARD WAS RELEASED WHICH IDENTIFIED THAT 91% OF CHILDREN AGES 5-17 DO NOT MEET MINIMAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY GUIDELINES FOR HEALTH. IN CONSULTATION WITH PARENT ADVISORY COUNCILS, LACK OF SAFE AND CONNECTED BICYCLING AND WALKING CORRIDORS FOR CHILDREN HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS THE MAIN BARRIER. VERNON HAS BEEN DEVELOPING SEPARATE ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION CORRIDORS THROUGHOUT THE CITY BUT THERE ARE GAPS IN CONNECTIONS WITH NEIGHBOURHOODS, THE DOWNTOWN CORE, AND TO THE RECREATION CENTRE.
IF ELECTED, HOW WILL YOU PROMOTE AN INTEGRATED AND CONNECTED ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION NETWORK SO ALL USERS FROM 8 TO 80 CAN FEEL SAFE WHEN TRAVELLING BY NON-MOTORIZED TRANSPORTATION?
I think Vernon has come a long way with both their Walking and Biking routes in the City. I do
agree that the disconnections in the routes does not encourage use or safe ease of use. Council
needs to consider all factors when weighing up decisions like building on and or purchasing land
for community development. I will certainly have health and wellness of the community in mind
when asked to weigh in on such decisions. A healthy accessible city benefits all of us and I will
advocate for specifically accessibility options that lead us in that direction.
DUE TO CONCERNS ABOUT ADVERSE HEALTH RISKS OF USING PESTICIDES FOR COSMETIC PURPOSES, THE CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY HAS RELEASED A POSITION STATEMENT URGING MUNICIPALITIES TO BAN THE USE OF THESE CHEMICALS. THERE ARE CURRENTLY 40 MUNICIPALITIES IN BC WHICH HAVE BANNED PESTICIDES FOR NON-ESSENTIAL PURPOSES.
IF ELECTED, WHAT IS YOUR STANCE ON PESTICIDE USE FOR NON-ESSENTIAL PURPOSES IN AREAS WHERE CHILDREN AND PETS ARE AT RISK?
I absolutely support the ban in this context.
